Dear Nia, I’ve heard so much hype around vitamin C in skin care. Is it really necessary? How do I apply it for best results, and in what order in my routine? – Stacey J.
Dear Stacey, a lot of the hype around vitamin C has to do with the fact that it has been studied extensively and verified as a beneficial ingredient for skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten skin, protect from environmental stressors/free radical damage. It’s also been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of hyperpigmentation and aging. Depending on your skin’s tolerance, I recommend using a vitamin C serum (because serums have the highest concentration of active ingredients) in the day time after cleansing before moisturizer/sunscreen.
Below are a few heavily reviewed serums that may be worth trying. If you can, consult with your esthetician or dermatologist to help choose the best formula for your skin’s needs.
Maelove Glow Maker, $28
While often compared to the cult favorite Skinceuticals C E Ferulic serum, this may be a close enough affordablish dupe for some skins.
Le Mieux Skincare Vita-C Serum, $65
This is a good option for more sensitive skins.
Is Clinical Super Serum Advance +, $155
Skinceuticals C E Ferulic® with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid, $166
