We want to answer your most pressing beauty questions, nothing is off limits. Please email them to: info@summersoulsticela.com. Below, a question for our resident esthetician and beauty director, Nia El-Amin.

Dear Nia, my skin is typically combination, but gets really dry during the winter. What’s the best way to combat this? – Tanya L.

Dear Tanya, Our skin is always looking for balance, but it can be specially tough during the winter months. During the winter, we’re combating the dry, cold air outside and the dry, central heating inside. I live in the Northeast so I definitely understand and have a surefire routine to soothe and hydrate your skin back to balance.

1. Exfoliate 1 - 2 times a week.

Moisturizers don’t hydrate dead skin cells. Skin needs exfoliation so that hydrating and moisturizing products can be properly absorbed. Once a week I use Le Mieux 5% Glyco Polymer solution on a piece of gauze before bed and wake up refreshed. The serums I use after sink in like a dream.

2. Soften dry patches with a physical exfoliant.

I keep a physical exfoliant in the shower for use a couple times a week - but never within 24 hours of the glyco polymer solution.

3. Pump up hydration with a serum.

This hyaluronic acid-based serum feels incredible, sinks in wonderfully and leaves skin moisturized, soothed and glowing. I use this right after exfoliating once my skin has dried down a bit.

4. Layer on moisturizer.

I love this rich and silky textured cream. It’s unscented (which I love) and provides protection and hydration for most skins. When I use this, I wake up feeling dewy and refreshed. It is rich, so a lighter option is the PCA Rebalance.

5. Layer on a facial oil.

This step isn’t for everyone, but if you’re feeling that your skin needs some extra extra love or protection from the elements a facial oil is a great last step in your routine. This facial oil is phenomenal and by a black-owned brand.
